Larry Pegram launched off the line at the start of American Superbike Race 2, trailed by Tommy Hayden, Josh Hayes, Ben Bostrom, Jake Zemke, and Eric Bostrom, Eboz running as high as he has this weekend. Hayes and Hayes were quickly by the Ducati rider, Tommy taking the lead with Josh settling in on his rear wheel and Pegram not far behind.Hayes made a move on lap seven to take over the lead, and soon the front four were evenly spaced in pursuit, heading fifth-place Zemke by more than three seconds. Hayden caught Graves Yamaha’s Hayes within a few laps and retook the lead, the two veteran riders testing each others’ defenses at various places around the track. With five to go, Rockstar/Makita Suzuki’s Hayden, still followed closely by Hayes, had managed to put a handful of bike lengths between himself and the third- and fourth-place riders. Slightly back in the field, Cycle World Attack Performance Suzuki’s Eric Bostrom crashed out to a collective “Aww” from the crowd, but was quickly up and okay. In sixth, Jordan Suzuki’s Brett McCormick was doing an excellent job of catching up to his teammate, National Guard Jordan Suzuki’s Zemke. As the white flag was shown, Hayden and Hayes were separated by just under a half second. It was high-time for a dogfight, but Hayden’s advantage kept him safe from Hayes while Pat Clark Yamaha’s Bostrom put in a final attack on Pegram heading into and out of the last turn—one that ultimately wasn’t enough to keep the Foremost Insurance rider off the podium.
