Is NASCAR’s Chase system for determining each champion each season
broken? Does it need fixing? It’s received criticism pretty much since
the format’s inception, and NASCAR Chairman and CEO Brian France
acknowledged recently that it’s being looked at.
At first, the Chase format that includes resetting points after race
26 on the 26-race schedule didn’t really seem fair, and that was one of
the biggest arguments against this new system. After all, it wiped away
large leads that drivers had worked so hard for, among other things.
The Chase format has been tweaked slightly here and there over the
years, like expanding from 10 to 12 drivers, changing the points reset
to differentiate drivers in the Chase by basing extra points on race
wins instead of leaving them in the same order and just separating each
