With less than 19 laps to go, Jeff Burton had it made to win the 17th race of the season at New Hampshire.
Burton moved up the track and at lap 63 with a fast car moves around Kyle Busch for 5th. At 92 he moves around Kurt Busch for 4th. At lap 146 Burton gets around Kyle Busch in Turn 4 and beats Busch to the line to lead. At 178 he pits to get 4 new tires. At 194 Jeff Burton passes Kasey Kahne for second. Then passes Kasey Kahne for second. Lap 200 Jeff Burton is on Kyle Busch's bumper challenging for the lead. 201 Burton is in the lead.
The 301 lap race had it’s first caution at lap 34 with debris on the road, then yellow number 2 when Kasey Kahne looses his engine in Turns 3 and 4. With Burton still maintaining the lead, Lap 282 Caution number 3: Juan Montoya gets together with Reed Sorenson sending Montoya hard into the Turn 4 wall.
From lap 259 Jimmie Johnson was on the tail of the 31 at on the 282 lap caution pulls off to get 2 new tires. Burton did not pit and I have to wonder why Burton’s crew did not think he could use 2 new tires to maintain the edge in which Jimmie Johnson was getting. Everyone else pits except Burton.
Lap 288 lead changes and Jimmie Johnson gets the lead. Then Lap 289 Caution number 4 Jeff Burton gets loose and clips Kyle Busch sending both cars spinning. Burton ends up in 12th position as Jimmie Johnson get the checkered flag.
IF, there were no more cautions that happened after the 2nd one, Burton with 87 laps and only 19 to go, would have won the race hands down.
Jeff Burton debuted in 1993 in New Hampshire and had won 4 races there. I was beginning to wonder if Todd Berrier, his crew chief, is giving him the correct advise. But come to find out, Burton himself said it was all his fault, he took a chance not to pit on the 3rd caution. I believe that was a big mistake.
