On Saturday July 3rd who knew what would happen next at the Coke Zero 400, which was delayed almost by an hour and a half because of rain.
What did happen, the points for many in the running for the chase did change.
The Coke Zero 400 proved to be a memorable one at Daytona International Speedway as the last race before the track is to be repaved.
The track surface was slick, but there was only one incident in the first half of the race. AJ Allmendinger lost control of his car in the 4th turn and slid onto the apron then backed into the inside wall.
There were 45 lead changes during the race, 9 cautions, and 1 red flag.
Kevin Harvick started the first lap in the lead, reclaimed the lead 8 times to win. The RCR cars did very well, and one in particular, tried for the win which has kept eluding him. Jeff Burton comes up to claim the lead himself 4 times. He showed everyone he wanted that win when in lap number 93 he passed Juan Montoya for 3rd. On Lap 96 he went to 2nd passing Jimmie Johnson, Burton did report his car was a little loose but handled well. On Lap 103 caution came out as Kyle Busch went into the wall. Lap 104 found Burton in the lead.
Lap 107 Mark Martin takes the lead from Burton but in Lap 113 Jeff Burton passes Jeff Gordon for the lead. Caution on Lap 116 when Ragan gets loose and slams into wall. Burton pits and in Lap 120 Tony Stewart after getting two new tires and winning race off pit road on Lap 118 takes the lead. Lap 126 Burton takes the lead from Tony Stewart, but in 128 Tony takes it back. By Lap 133 Kevin Harvick was leading when Jeff Burton again takes the lead. He holds off Harvick but another caution came at Lap number 136 Jeff Burton pits and calls the car perfect.
Lap 148 was The Big One where contact was made between Jeff Burton and Kurt Busch on the backstretch, the accident wound up involving at least 20 cars and changed the race completely. Burton, who bounced off Busch and then Sam Hornish Jr. to trigger the incident those behind began to slow and caused a change reaction.
"I don't even know what happened," Burton said. "(Busch) was coming with a big head of steam and we got together. I don't know if it was my fault or his fault. It was one of our faults, and we wrecked half the field, unfortunately." For the rest of the evening Jimmie Johnson, Tony Stewart and Juan Montoya were out of it. And as a result, Reed Sorenson, Mike Bliss and Scott Speed scored unexpected top-10 finishes. Lap 152 green flag with Clint Bower leading followed by Carl Edwards in 2nd and Kevin Harvick in 3rd. Gordon takes the lead in Lap 157 but in Lap 159 Clint Bowyer takes the lead and caution came out as Sam Hornish, Jr is into the wall in turn 4 and takes Kurt Busch. In Lap 165 Kevin Harvick takes the lead from Bower and gets the white flag, then the checkered flag on Las 166 and wins. Jeff was at 5th place, with Dale Earnhardt Jr. being just ahead in 4th.
After the race, Dale Earnhardt Jr., which just won the Nationwide race the day before driving the number 3 Wrangler car, said he was "just so damn embarrassed about how we ran all night" and even apologized to his fans for not having a competitive car. "We're getting a little bit more lucky than I would like," he said. "We're not running good enough to finish 4th, so we're lucky to finish there. You don't want to make the Chase on pure luck, you know? You want to make it because you ran well." Jr. also said the No. 88 team "just totally missed it" with the setup "We've just got to be smarter, you know?"
You have to wonder what Rick Hendrick and Jr’s team thinks about those comments, also what changes maybe coming in Dale Earnhardt Jr’s future with Hendrick motorsports.
The Coke Zero 400 was the last race as I stated on the current Daytona track. Some of the drivers spoke during the rain delay that they wanted a piece of the track, which brings me to the idea that maybe pieces of the Dayton track may be sold as souvenirs. If so, I may just want a piece of that history.
