Jacob Nichols has more than 50 career wins between dirt track, TT and ice racing competition. Over the summer, he won his 10th State Championship during the American Motorcyclist Association District 14 State Championship Half-Mile, held at the Croswell Fairgrounds.
For a second grader at Caro’s McComb Elementary, that’s not too bad.
Following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather, it’s no surprise that Nichols would be involved in racing, especially at such a young age.
Nichols began racing at four and actively competing at age five, finishing his first full year of competition in 2010. He ran a limited schedule in 2008 and 2009, but never missed a race in 2010 (34 races), also winning the AMA District 14 Iron Man Award.

Aboard his Honda CRF50 and KTM Pro Junior 50 SX motorcycles, Nichols raced dirt track statewide on half-mile, short track and TT courses. He logged in 41 wins for the year, along with a few second and third place finishes. Last summer, Nichols won his first Overall TT State Championship; this winter, he won his second ice racing State Championship.
In the half-mile, Nichols has been clocked at 65 mph. He wears the best equipment for safety protection, and hasn’t been seriously hurt in this sport that some consider dangerous.
