Tomorrow the reconnaissance and shakedown down activities for IRNY will begin on a few choice, dirt roads in Sullivan County, New York. Meanwhile IRNY Rally HQ will be a busy hub as drivers, crew, and volunteers register for the main event that starts Friday morning and finishes Saturday night. The full itinerary for the rally can be found on the Rally New York website. Here in the United States, Rally is a sleeper sport.  I have a Rally New York sticker on my Evo's windshield but I bet most people think it means something political.  There are two main rally organizations in the USA.  Rally America and United States Rally Championship (USRC).   Rally America sanctions nine national championship events and at least 20 regional events.  The USRC sanctions seven national events and some regional events as well.  Between the two, events are spread across the USA, so you could find one reasonably near you.  You might want to consider seeing a rally or volunteering to help out as a Marshal because they really are flat out, racing, intense, exciting, motorsport events.  Rally New York puts on two rallys a year. The first kicks off the USRC season and is called, simply, Rally New York.  It is their tarmac edition.  The second is called International Rally New York, it is unpaved, and this will be the last event in the USRC calendar for 2009.   I checked out the USRC standings and it doesn't look like there is a close battle for positions within Division A, but in Division P there may be some hot and heavy competition. The competition within the Rally New York series will be serious as well.   I was Chief Marshal for RNY for a couple of years so I'll be thinking of everyone with great fondness and wishing I were there!  My best wishes are going out to volunteers for good weather, and a good time, and to the competitors for no serious accidents!
