I received my Porsche newsletter today. It's a Porsche sales publication but I always look at it. Today the newsletter is extolling the Porsche 911 GT3 R Hybrid. The photo enticed me, I took the bait and I went to the website. Which is, btw, VERY sweet (don't skip the trailer).
Back in May, 2009, I wrote an article on Orato regarding the WorldF3rst Racing's Eco Friendly car and that's when I started wondering how long it would be before Porsche got into the hybrid mix; and less than a year later, here we are.
The Porsche 911 GT3 R Hybrid will premiere at the Geneva Motor Show in a couple of weeks. Here's what I'm able to gather from the website... There is an electrical front axle drive with two electric motors developing 60kW each that supplement (somehow) the 480 bhp 4 ltr flat six rear mounted engine. There is where I would usually get tutored by my son but I'll continue to wing it. In addition, instead of usual batteries found in a hybrid road car, this baby has an electrical flywheel power generator. I don't really understand how it works but the charged flywheel provides extra energy that helps boost acceleration. And from the brakes, energy usually wasted in heat is now converted to additional drive power. After the big debut in Geneva they're taking the new Porsche baby to Nurburgring (where else) to do long distance tests.
Watch the youtube video and see for yourself... altho I didn't readily find it on the website I'm willing to bet the R stands for "Rennsport"
