Bowyer penalty right on the moneyposted in NASCAR on Sep 23rd 2010 at 12:12pm.

If there was ever a time to pay attention to the rules, it seems doing so during the “playoffs” would be the time. As we found out today, the RCR #33 of Clint Bowyer apparently didn’t mind the rule book last weekend in Loudon.

Bowyer’s Crew Chief, Shane Wilson, and Car Chief, Chad Haney, are both $150,000 lighter in the bank account today, and the #33 team has fallen from 2nd to LAST in the championship chase due to the 150 point spanking handed out by NASCAR for the team’s violation of body template rules last weekend. While the car apparently passed pre-race inspection, it failed the post race run through.

Ouch!

More painful is the fact the team was warned one week earlier (Richmond) by NASCAR officials for the same (at that time) potential violation.

Double Ouch!

Of course, RCR owner Richard Childress has announced he will appeal, but we all know how frequently appeals turn out favorably with the NASCAR brass. He’d be better off arguing balls and strikes with a Major League umpire.

Is the punishment too harsh? I’d argue not. The fine a little steep? Well, Clint (and Shane and Chad) you WERE warned!

And with this gaffe – so much for my prediction of etching #33 on the Champion’s trophy in Homestead. All bets are off now.

And to the rest of the 11 contenders – NASCAR just sent a very loud warning. Abide by the rules!
