Somewhere today, an impressionable young girl is further defining her dream of becoming a racecar driver. This youngster knew about and followed Danica Patrick, and now that (arguably) the most recognizable of female professional athletes is venturing onto the NASCAR stage, there is even greater opportunity and likelihood this youngster will be able to pursue her dream.
Oh who am I kidding? Enough with the fluff. The entre’ of Danica Patrick into NASCAR is first and foremost a business move.
Danica Patrick in NASCAR will sell tickets – ARCA and Nationwide series promoters are doing cartwheels in their offices today.
Danica Patrick in NASCAR will sell merchandise – particularly to the legions of “impressionable young girls” who share “the dream.”
Danica Patrick in NASCAR will sell sponsorships – at least until her foot stomping, helmet throwing post-race tantrums wear thin on Madison Avenue nerves.
Regardless of how you (or I) feel about her entry into stock car racing’s arena, one thing that Danica definitely adds is an element of interest that has been sadly lacking during the past several years. At the very least, races with her #7 GoDaddy.com Chevy should be anything but boring to watch. And her commercials aren’t bad either!
I’m predicting a Love/Hate fan relationship in the grandstands though. Middle-ground regarding an opinion about her will likely be scarce.
There will be those ticketholders who parted with their paychecks to witness her tears of triumph in victory lane when she wins her first race (I wonder if NASCAR will position a fan to blow her hair in dramatic fashion when she takes off her helmet?).
There will be still others who will put down their adult beverages just long enough to cheer loudly when she plows her ride into the turn three wall (enter the previously referred to temper-tantrum and obligatory finger pointing).
Regardless of which side you or I choose in the Patrick debate, the 2010 season hasn’t even started and already the excitement meter has moved higher.
