A few days ago, one of my colleagues posed the question about the relevance and luster of NASCAR's upcoming All-Star event. He wondered if the race had lost its appeal?
In discussing the issue, I took the question a step further and asked if ANY professional sports All-Star event had relevance to the sport it represents?
Certainly the NFL's Pro Bowl, and the NBA and NHL All-Star games aren't relevant. They are hardly real games for that matter. All three are simply demonstrations of offensive fire power. In fact, I'd say they're actually laughable.
The only All-Star event with anything of value placed on its outcome for the teams involved is that of Major League Baseball - with the game's winning league gaining home field advantage in that season's World Series.
Even in NASCAR, the All-Star race doesn't result in anything of significance for the winner - with the exception of a very large pay check! Checkers or wreckers they say. It is arguably the most competitive of any of the professional All-Star events. That factor, in and of itself, may make NASCAR’s All-Star race worth the time for the fringe fan, as well as the tried and true among us.
So what do you think? Is NASCAR's All-Star race this Saturday a must see...or a must miss?
