Making a comeback?posted in NASCAR on Apr 26th 2011 at 6:06am.

With the start of each new racing season, particularly at the local level, optimism is the norm. Teams anxious to turn laps have visions of meeting their goals – being competitive; winning races; and, even taking track championships. They’re all within reach prior to the drop of the season’s first green flag.

For regional short-track owners and promoters, the same sense of optimism is prominent prior to taking the lock off the front gate.

During the past several years in the Midwest, however, that optimism has turned to pessimism under the din of a faltering economy. Dwindling attendance, both in the stands and in the pits, have led to extreme measures. Partial schedules and even track closures have become common.

But the tide could be turning. Optimism may again reign over the dirt and asphalt ovals throughout the region.

Industries traditionally hampered by a down economy are beginning to rebound. In Michigan, Indiana and Ohio, the housing industry is seeing increased activity, according to the trade associations representing the housing and homebuilders industry. Detroit and its auto makers are again making noise – and for the right reasons! “Imported from Detroit” shouts recovery. So does the profitability of Ford and Chrysler’s payback of Federal loans – six years ahead of them coming due.

A sign the racing industry may in small part be on the mend is evident in the small town of Auburn, Michigan (about two hours north of Detroit). A track which has been overtaken during the past several seasons by decay and weeds is now buzzing with activity. Steve Puvalowski tells me he and his team plan to open Tri-City Speedway in late May. With good weather, a little luck and the support of a community wanting for more action, Tri-City Speedway may be the barometer for racing’s comeback in this state.

And, yes, it’s just one track opening in a sea of economic turmoil within the racing industry. But it still is an opening. Let’s take on 2011 with a glass half full, and here’s hoping it will be one of the most successful seasons yet.
