It doesn’t matter whether you’re a race fan or not here in Michigan, one thing is for sure, Felix Sabates is not a popular individual in the Great Lakes State. While conducting an interview on the economics and popularity of racing with an internet racing site, Sabates lamented on the expenses involved in NASCAR’s Sprint Cup series, indicating supply has outdone demand.
The car owner indicated about six fewer stops on the tour would help solve NASCAR’s popularity problem. Today Felix is regretting the diarrhea of the mouth-constipation of the brain manner in which he communicated his idea.
Specifically, Sabates said of the two Sprint Cup dates at Michigan International Speedway, “I mean, there's nobody left in Detroit other than the police and the unemployed. I'd cut Michigan off the schedule altogether. Michigan – I'm talking about the state – is never coming back to what it used to be, so why go there and throw good money after bad money?"
That’s classy Felix.
He later issued an apology to those he may have offended stating his comments were taken out of context.
Well Mr. Sabates, let me help you with the “context.”
He also indicated in his statement, of Pocono Raceway – "Nice people, but we don't need to go to Pocono twice. At all, actually.”
Auto Club Speedway at Fontana, Calif. One.
Atlanta Motor Speedway. One.
Phoenix International Raceway. One.
Fixed.
Indianapolis made his cut only because of attendance.
"Too many of everything," Sabates said.
All I can say at this point is I hope Mr. Sabates has thick skin. Chants of Fe-lix Sucks! Fe-lix Sucks! will no doubt be ringing from grandstand to grandstand in Pennsylvania, Michigan, California, Arizona and Georgia this race season.
And, there’s no questioning the context in which these fans will express their thoughts on the subject!
